The GOV, Johnny Gaw Yu Wins Outstanding Filipino Luminary Award 2021

Filipino Philanthropist Johnny Gaw Yu is awarded the Outstanding Filipino Luminary Award 2021 (Private Citizen) for his contribution to society. This was announced by EspiCom Group, organizer of the awards ceremony. The prestigious award is given annually to a select few who have made great contributions to the country as private citizens. Johnny has lived a life of kindness, great generosity, and public service. He is a seasoned and successful business entrepreneur as well as an indefatigable civic leader. Even during his college years, Johnny's business acumen was obvious. He remembers, "When I was in college, I tried to sell my friends and classmates Philippines-made customized tees. It turned out to be a successful business venture, so I expanded my operations to include Laguna , Quezon, Batangas , Bulacan , and Baguio before becoming its primary distributor." Johnny's desire to serve his fellow men is matched by his ability to run a business. Johnny was raised seeing his father give financial help to those in need, and as a youngster, he recognized what charity, pakikipag-kapwa, and malasakit meant. But these terms began to have greater significance when he began volunteer work as a young man. He started out providing humanitarian assistance as part of a Civic Action Group before moving on to more significant ventures. Johnny's life has several events that appear to be linked to humanitarian activities, such as firefighting and rescue services. He successfully extinguished his own home from a fire by putting it out quickly before it could spread, resulting in second-degree burns. At age 17, Johnny had received rescue training after determining that previous experience was insufficient. When he was in college, Johnny joined the Rotary Club. In 1989, as a charter member of the Rotaract Club of PSBA Manila under Rotary Club of University District R.I 3810, he was recruited to be the club's president. During his term, he served as President of RAC PSBA and received accolades for being the best club in the District. Johnny has a unique combination of business acumen and a strong desire to help people. In 2017, he gave the Rotary Club of Cubao Center for Excellence in Lanzones Street, Project 2, Anonas, Quezon City a four-story building that is now known as the Johnny Loves Charity Building. This structure was built to provide the club with a long-term youth development program, including industrial service and leadership training programs. It's also a venue for disaster management courses and other activities. He has vehicles and equipment that are lent out and put to use by volunteers in times of crisis. Johnny has donated $250,000 to the Rotary Foundation, making him the first Arch Klump Society member in District 3780 to do so. Not only did he receive a more prestigious honour for himself and the district, but he also received a plaque honouring his donation. Johnny will receive his award on November 19, 2021 at Conrad Manila Hotel.

RI Chiropractors Weigh in on Replacing Your Home Office Chair

Providence, RI, November 8, 2021 -- With more and more people working from home, many home offices are getting more use than previously intended—particularly office chairs. That’s led many home workers to wonder at what point should they replace their old office chair with a new one. “Many people wait until their office chair is showing wear and tear before entertaining the thought of getting a new one,” said Dr. Kristin Kolesar Fabris, president of the Chiropractic Society of Rhode Island and a chiropractor at Be Well Chiropractic & Health in Providence, RI. “The reality is you should make a decision on your current chair based more on its ergonomics than its current condition. A chair can look good and still do harm to your legs, back and neck.” When it comes to selecting an ergonomic office chair for your home office, Dr. Fabris recommends an adjustable chair to customize settings that work for you. That starts with lumbar support. The lumbar support must adjust to the curves of your back. This also goes for the back rest as well. You typically want the back rest to be between one foot and 19 inches wide. A proper office chair also enables you to sit with your feet planted flat on the floor and your legs at a 90-degree angle. A chair height between 16 and 21 inches should work for most people. Remember, you also want your arms to be equal height with the desk’s surface. That’s why you want a chair with a height lever for easy adjustment. Finally, there’s seat width. You want a chair with a width between 17 and 20 inches. Please keep in mind when you sit there should be a gap between two and four inches from the back of your knee to the chair. “Following these guidelines will help you select a proper ergonomic office chair. Yet the real test is when you sit in the chair for an extended period of time,” said Dr. Fabris. “You will want to research the return policy for whomever you buy your new chair from. If your new chair doesn’t feel right after a day or so of extended seating, return it. Sure, you can make adjustments to height, etc. Sometimes it may not be the right chair. That’s why it’s encouraged to try these chairs out in the store first.” Dr. Fabris adds, “For people with chronic back conditions, even a good office chair does not eliminate issues. You may want to consider a standing desk as sitting less can also help. Beautiful Galle and Fenton Vases from The Jochimsen Collection do well at Woody Auction, October 23

Douglass, KS, USA, November 8, 2021 -- A 9 ¾-inch-tall blown mold French cameo glass vase signed Galle and a Fenton mosaic art glass pedestal vase each knocked down for $6,600 to share top lot honors at the sale of the private collection of Dr. Peter and Grace Jochimsen, held October 23rd by Woody Auction, online (via LiveAuctioneers.com) and live in the Woody Auction hall located at 130 East Third Street in Douglass.  The Galle vase was of the highest quality and featured white, yellow and green tones, with a green cameo carved vine and blossom décor. The Fenton pedestal vase, unmarked, was made from mosaic art glass and boasted beautiful colors. Made circa 1925, the vase featured most of the original Fenton label. Other makers in the sale included Tiffany & Company, Royal Flemish, Daum Nancy and others.  The Jochimsen collection was a bountiful selection of some of the best Wave Crest and French cameo pieces available, plus other fine items. The Wave Crest featured plaques, jardinieres, bells, boxes and vases. The collection also boasted French cameo, plated Amberina, pink agata, slot machines, a Pairpoint lamp, Thomas Webb & Sons English cameo and more. Over 500 lots came up for bid.  "We were really pleased with how well the four Newcomb pieces did," said Jason Woody, the owner of Woody Auction. "The Fenton mosaic art glass was also exciting to auction. It went far above our estimates. Overall, the Jochimsen collection was enormous. We will be selling more of his antiques in our December 18th online-only auction. Collectors need to mark their calendars. The date isn’t far off.”  Following are additional highlights from the auction, which attracted about 50 live bidders to the Douglass auction hall and 855 online bidders, who placed 2,310 bids over the Internet. A handful of phone and absentee bids were recorded. Prices quoted include the buyer’s premium, when it was applicable (there is no bp for in-person winning bidders paying by cash or check).  Another signed Galle vase – a lovely example of French cameo art glass, with blown mold cherry branch décor, yellow and white ground with finely cameo carved cranberry overlay, 11 ¼ inches tall, finished at $4,750. Also, an unmarked Royal Flemish by Mt. Washington vase, having a nicely segmented background with griffin and dragon enamel décor, fetched $3,000.  An unmarked Wave Crest art glass plaque, showing a scene of a young woman in a pink dress, housed in the original 15 ½ inch gilt metal frame with the original backing, reached $4,888. Also, a rare, unmarked Wave Crest cameo carved jewelry box, an example of the highest quality art glass, with a lake and tree scenic décor, 3 ¼ inches by 6 inches, garnered $2,750.  A signed Webb English cameo art glass cologne bottle, square form, 6 inches tall, yellow ground with cranberry and white cameo carved floral vine décor and a glass stopper, brought $3,850; while a French cameo art glass perfume signed Daum Nancy, with a yellow and orange ground with cameo carved poppy and cornflower décor, plus enamel highlights, rose to $3,738.  Collectors of Tiffany were treated to a footed bowl signed “L.C. Tiffany-Favrile #596T”, having a clear crystal ribbed optic with green opaque leaf and pink blossom décor ($2,750); and a Tiffany Studios flower form art glass vase (#23819), 16 inches tall, with an elegant bronze base and stem holding an art glass “bloom” of lavender and opal pulled feather design ($2,500).  A pink agata art glass pitcher by New England, diminutive at just 6 ¼ inches tall, having exceptional mottling with a ribbed decorated applied handle, changed hands for $3,000. Also, an A. Walter Nancy pate-de-verre French art glass bowl, featuring panels of pinecones and beetles, a collaboration piece marked “A. Walter Nancy” and “Henri Berge”, realized $2,875.  Lovely vases came up for bid frequently throughout the day. Other top achievers included:  - A 10-inch-tall pink agata Morgan art glass vase on original glass griffin base ($2,700).- A marked Newcomb art pottery vase with tree and moss scenic décor signed by artist Anna Francis Simpson, made circa 1930, 5 1/34 inches tall, marked “SQ-6” ($2,588).- An unmarked Loetz Victoria pattern art glass vase, 7 inches tall, circa 1887, with the pattern a richer version of the Federzeichnung pattern, with rare orange color ($2,475).
