Brody Malone deleted Instagram from his phone after racing to the lead at the U.S. Gymnastics Championships, an attempt to cut out distractions as he eyed his first national title.
Consider it good practice. If the 21-year-old keeps performing like this, the distractions around him are only going to increase heading to Tokyo.
Confident from start to finish, Malone overcame a nervous mistake on parallel bars to post a two-day total of 170.700 and stamp himself as the new standard-bearer for the men’s program with the Summer Games just seven weeks away.

Mikulak spent Friday in a long discussion with his sports psychologist after an uncharacteristically off night on Thursday that left him far behind Malone. Competing for the first time in nearly 15 months, Mikulak surprisingly ran out of gas during his final two events. An extended chat with his sports psychologist on Friday helped him hit reset.
He came out flying, drilling his floor exercise to start the finals. Minutes later, he came off the pommel horse in the middle of his routine. It would be his only major misstep, a positive development for the lone constant in the U.S. men’s program since he made his first Olympic team in 2012. Mikulak saved his best moment for last, sticking the dismount on his high bar routine before roaring while pumping his fists.
“How do you have fun? I was trying to ask that question,” Mikulak said. “When does this get fun? Well, you have to put on a performance.”
Something Mikulak has done with stunning regularity for the last nine years. His time, however, is coming to an end. He’s engaged and ready to get on with the next chapter of his life. The decision to not push toward 2024 has freed him in a way. The rust now hopefully gone, Mikulak is eager to attack the final months of his long career.
The Olympic selection committee is relying strictly on the performance at the trials to determine the five-man team. Malone has spent the last five months making a pretty compelling argument. He helped the Cardinal capture the NCAA team title in April and added an all-around title to bookend the one he earned as a freshman in 2019.
“He’s really great to have in the gym every day,” Stanford teammate Brandon Briones, who finished fourth, said of Malone. “We train with him constantly. He’s always the first one in the gym, last one out.”
Shane Wiskus, who moved from the University of Minnesota to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado last fall, was poised to push for one of the top four spots before a nightmarish turn on high bar in his last event. Wiskus saw his hands slip off three times to drop all the way to ninth. Wiskus wore an ace bandage on his right hand during a portion of the awards ceremony.
Allan Bower, who put off going to medical school for a year after the Olympics were pushed back to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, came in fifth.
The Americans earned a “plus one” spot at the Olympics thanks to Paul Juda’s second-place all-around finish at the Pan American Championships on Friday. USA Gymnastics high-performance director Brett McClure said the team will likely use that spot on a specialist rather than an all-arounder.
The selection committee will have its hands full. While Malone won the national title by nearly three points, the gap between second and sixth was just 2.450 points.

Tech-Focused Architect Capital To Provide Asset-Based Financing
A new San Francisco-area asset-based lender called Architect Capital has launched with more than $100 million to lend to most technology companies in the U.S. and Latin America, according to a press release.
“The global technology and startup industry is evolving quickly, and new forms of financing to fund novel and underappreciated assets are a necessary part of that evolution,” said Architect Capital Founder and CEO James Sagan in the release. “We’re excited to launch Architect Capital to help disruptive, asset-rich technology companies scale quickly.”
FinTech startups and young companies will be among those upon which Architect Capital focuses as it seeks to build the business, according to the release. The company’s pitch is that providers of financial services have yet to catch up with innovations in the tech sector, with venture capital taking too big a piece of young firms’ equity and traditional lenders offering inadequate support for clients that are scaling.
The release stated, in part: “While traditional forms of equity and debt financing in the venture ecosystem are still very much integral to the growth of these companies, traditional financing is not engineered to support the growth of a company’s underlying financial products.”
The company has invested in six companies to date, including PayJoy, which the release described as “a company that delivers consumer financing and smartphone technology to customers in emerging markets.”
“Architect has been an excellent partner for our capital needs,” said PayJoy President of Financial Products Brad Pennington in the release. “They bring an excellent balance of rigor and flexibility; an important combination for scaling in emerging markets.”
Sagan said in the release: “While I have been investing in companies in Latin America over the last six years, we are still in the early stages of the area’s FinTech story. At Architect Capital, we are thrilled to be at the forefront of firms investing in the region as we approach an inevitable period of exponential growth.”

The USA take on Mexico in Concacaf Nations League Final in Denver tonight
With a golden opportunity to win the inaugural Concacaf Nations League championship at home, the senior U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) will take on archrival Mexico in tonight’s finale in Denver’s Empower Field at Mile High Stadium. In the tournament’s consolation match, Costa Rica will go up against Honduras.
The U.S. advanced to the championship bracket by defeating a defiant Honduras side 1-0 in a nail-biter of a match on the evening of June 3. Costa Rica succumbed to a high-octane Mexico squad during a thrilling six-round penalty kick shootout that brought thousands of enthusiastic fans to their feet.
A vibrant and vocal crowd is expected again this evening, complete with a blend of American Outlaws chapters and Pancho Villa’s Army supporter groups. Thursday night’s games brought out nearly 35,000 fans under mandated limited attendance.
U.S. head coach Gregg Berhalter’s elite 23-player roster includes Colorado Rapids’ versatile box-to-box midfielder, Kellyn Acosta, along with Colorado Real Soccer Club product and goalkeeper Ethan Horvath. Obviously, getting to celebrate and having some family and friends there and be with my teammates was an incredible achievement, so we’re really proud. And, yeah, now it’s right back to work. But I’m happy, I’m excited to have a chance to go after this trophy with the national team, and, yeah, I’m ready to go.”
“Any time you get teams together to compete in a tournament format, it’s exciting. And with this being the first version of that, we want to win it and we want to compete to lift that first trophy,” Berhalter said before a recent training session at Dick’s Sporting Good Park. “It’s involving the top teams in our region, so that’s a good thing. When you watch the European Nations League, it was great. The semifinals and final was a great event, and I think we’re helping—it’s a help to the smaller soccer nations that get to compete in these events. And then when you get to the semifinals and the final is when you get to see the big nations squaring off against each other. For us, it’s a great competitive event... These guys are competitive and they want to win trophies.”
The head coach and U.S fans expect the team to come out with pace and nose-to-nose tenacity against Mexico, as this roster appears to the group that Berhalter will field next month through August when the team embarks on the 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup tournament. Thereafter, they will commence their run at securing a spot in FIFA’s 2022 World Cup tournament in Qatar. To qualify, the Yanks will need to run the table with wins in the 2021-2022 Concacaf Octagonal, which kicks off this September and runs through March 2022.

Shopping bags and shoeboxes from fashion brands like Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Dior, and Chanel, also command top dollar on sites like eBay and Poshmark. Say you recently bought a pair of Sophie Turner’s slipper boots from Louis Vuitton, which cost $1,480, you could sell the box they came in for an average price of £74, or $126, according to Money. Since you get a fancy shoebox no matter the shoe model, you could, instead, purchase a lower-priced pair, say Louis Vuitton’s $695 pool slides, and get back a good chunk of your investment by reselling the box. Nike, Christian Louboutin, Saint Laurent, Fendi, Breitling, and Cartier, too, made Money’s list of the top 20 most valuable luxury brand packages.
According to a Danish Mathematical Economics student named Christian Bendsten — who is currently listing a Rick Owens tote bag, which comes free with any purchase from the brand, for $97 on Grailed — this phenomenon isn’t new to the pandemic era. “[Resold packaging] really started with things like Chanel coathangers, [and evolved from there],” he tells Refinery29. On Grailed and other sites, he often sees listings for Dior and Louis Vuitton chains that come attached to duffles, as well as Carol Christian Poell garment bags and Supreme stickers. Some of the items being sold are useful, like his Rick Owens tote bag, while others are strictly marketing add-ons, like the stickers or bag chains that brands typically give away for free with purchases.

Bendtsen sees luxury packaging as an introduction to high fashion, likening a designer dust bag or shopping tote to diffusion lines, like MM6 Maison Margiela or the now-defunct Marc by Marc Jacobs. These brands are easily recognizable, he says, but can cost a fraction of the price of a mainline designer item. With a Chanel shopping bag, you get the clout without the hefty price tag. It’s not dissimilar to the way lesser-priced beauty products can function as gateways to a brand. Maybe you start with a Gucci perfume before you work up the courage (and the funds) to invest in a Jackie bag or a pair of loafers. An $85 expenditure is a lot easier to justify than $850. Plus, according to Money, you can make £16, or $27, by selling the bottle once the perfume runs out.
